Just a short post about the gear for tomorrow’s marathon….
I’m faced with a problem with tomorrow’s race. I have been training for a year to complete the marathon and, given that I live in a desert, have never had to deal with running in the rain. I’ve run in a shower or two, but nothing significant. Tomorrow, however, is expected to be raining (actually, from 2 PM today on through 3 PM tomorrow) – anywhere from showers to full-on rain. The temperature is expected to be right around 52 degrees (f) for the entire time.
So, what gear should I be wearing? At the moment, my plans are to wear my Hoka One One Clifton 3s, a pair of longer 2-in-1 shorts with a compression short lining, a Columbia Omni-heat top, and a ball cap that I got at a half marathon a couple years ago. I’m still waffling about socks. Over that, I think I’m going to go for the poncho that I got when taking the Maid of the Mist cruise at Niagara Falls, maybe using a bungee cord to keep it from blowing around. This has the advantage of being very compressible (or even toss-able) if I get a break in the rain or cool off. I’m also going to wear a pair of cheap stretchy gloves that I can tuck into my belt if need be. I’ve waffled about drinks as I usually run with a Camelbak lumbar pack and I’m not sure how the rain will affect my hydration.
Back to my socks. I’ve worn CEP compression socks for most of my races the last 5 years and I had planned to shift to wearing Thorlos for this one (my CEP socks just developed a hole in the sole after many miles and 5 years!) but I also have a pair of SmartWool socks that might do better in the rain. Then, of course, there’s the idea of running with both compression and one of the others because the extra protection on my legs might be helpful over that long a run at a chilly temperature.
I really won’t know until I get dressed, but that’s part of the fun of deciding these things!
